Selected 1840s Decedents’ Domestic Environments

Returning to the question raised earlier on, and moving from the generic to the specific, what of the actual contents of the inventories of the eleven 1840s decedents? Can differences be discerned in the style of life achieved or chosen by this small sample that can be associated with occupation? The five businessmen include the three criss-crossing decedents-Thomas Cole, hairdresser, John Robinson, clothing trader, and John Scarlett, clothesdealer-whose household goods have been closely examined for their similarities and dissimilarities (lists 2.1-2.3, 9.1-9.3, and 10.1-10.3). A mental image of their domestic environment was gradually constructed from the array of the particular possessions that comprised the generic sets in each category of comfort:

Necessities—one to three beds, a table or two, a slew of chairs or none, numerous or no storage units, several simple sources of lighting or none, one or more or no fixtures related to heating and cooking, and some items associated with food preparation and/or consumption.
